PURPOSE: Cancer-induced mortality, often characterized by a gradual decline, profoundly impacts the familial structure from the initial diagnosis through the patient's demise and beyond. This study aims to explore the dynamics of the family and the process of reconstruction following the loss of a child to cancer. METHODS: Employing a phenomenological qualitative research approach, the study involved semi-structured interviews with 10 families who had lost a child to cancer. Interviews were conducted with parents in seven families and with siblings in three families. Data analysis was conducted using thematic analysis, following Colaizzi's seven-step procedure. RESULTS: The results indicate that changes in family structure begin at the initial stage of diagnosis and continue through the treatment process. Accepting the child's death is identified as a crucial phase in the effort to rebuild the family framework. The findings reveal that following the demise, factors such as changes in family boundaries, collapse of family subsystems, and the occurrence of family stressors impact both the structure and equilibrium of the family. However, the loss of a child also led to positive changes in family dynamics at times, fostering enhanced interactions among members, increased mutual support, and a more effective distribution of roles and responsibilities. CONCLUSION: The findings of this study provide insights into the evolution of family dynamics during and after the loss of a child, offering valuable information for supportive interventions.
